The Siersza Power Plant

The Siersza Power Plant in Trzebinia is a part of The Southern Power Concern S.A. Katowice since 2001. It is situated in the north-western part of the Malopolska Voivodeship in the Trzebinia administrative territory and was constructed between 1962-1970 as a system power plant. It consists of six coal-fired boiler power units with total installed power 740 MW. The Power Plant produces electric energy which is evacuated to the national grid along 110 and 220 kV lines as well as thermal energy which is intended for local residents.

The modernisation of the Siersza Power Plant has been under way since 1990 with special regard to ecological and technical issues as well as to the requirements of environmental protection laws, re-building production capacity and extending the life of the plant for another twenty years. Within the confines of comprehensive modernisation two power units are equipped with a flue gas de-sulphurisation system. Thanks to rapid realisation of investments and the technical parameters achieved it was recognised in a Polish competition as the "Investment of the Year". The pulverised-fuel boilers have low-emission torches built in to restrict emission of nitrogen monoxide through modernised elektro-filters . The renovation of the last one included the installation of completely new high efficiency measuring instruments. The power units are equipped with stationary apparatus for continuous emission measuring which permits supervision of emissions of dust and gas pollutants. The modernisation of de-ashing has completely eliminated the depositing of furnace waste from 1996 as these are utilised in mine workings.

Ground levelling works of the former sand mine workings were carried out with the aid of furnace waste, the reclamation ended up with forest areas being reclaimed.

A modern fluid boiler power unit was installed in place of the existing no. 1 power unit, including electro-filters and a condensation turbine of the newest generation with maximum power of 153 MW. The re-construction of no. 2 power unit commenced in January 2001 and is due to be completed by the end of 2002.

These will the first hard coal fluid boilers in Poland of that unit power with secondary steam re-heating and air cooled generators. A thorough modernisation programme is to be implemented by the Power Plant of the remaining power units maintaining high environmental protection standards. Production equipment conforms to both National and European Standards as well as current ecological requirements. As a result of these investments and modernisation the power production capacity of the Power Plant shall be increased to 797MW, a high degree of equipment reliability and limitation of harmful emissions to the environment shall be achieved.

Due to the pro-ecological steps undertaken, which commenced in the beginning of the nineties, resulted in the Power Plant being removed from the list of eighty most troublesome plants in the country in July this year. The Siersza Power Plant in Trzebinia is the first Power Plant in Poland to receive the ISO14001Certificate of Environmental Management in December 2000, in the area of electric and thermal energy production. This year the prize "Pantheon of Polish Ecology" was awarded to the Siersza Power Plant. This prize exemplifies the honour of all Polish companies which elaborated and implemented the Environmental Management System which is in line with international standards.
