Carbonation

The basic means to provide the Siersza power plant with fuel till the 90s was the Siersza mine. Only some additional amounts were transported in self-dumping "Talbot" wagons and unloaded at the slot bunker dispensers. Now due to the fact that the mine is being closed down coal is transported from different mines in Śląsk. Some changes have had to be introduced in the existing carbonation system to adjust it to the discharge and storage needs within the plant areas. Coal can be provided via rail transport, "Talbot" wagons or road transport. The plant now has two separate coal depots and one coal-sludge depot. Depot 1 (inner) is designed to store coal for two OFz-425 fluid boilers. Depot 2, placed next to the plant, is designed to store coal for units 3 to 6 and it is linked with a chain of belt conveyors and loading and dumping conveyors and a discharge bunker.

In fluid boilers, apart from the basic fuel, coal-sludges (of the heating value of 10,000 kJ/kg and wetness up to 40%) are burnt (about 10% of the chemical energy). They are the output of the sulfur removal process. Coal sludges are transported to the Siersza plant on the self-dumping vehicles and are discharged into an intake tank in the depot where the sludge is prepared and transported. Then they are transferred via a screw conveyor to a piston pump which pumps the sludge along the pipeline to an intermediary tank in the intermediary depot. This tank functions as a buffer and at the same time, as it is situated close to boilers 1 and 2, it ensures the regular administartion of the sludges to the boilers. The system operates with the efficiency of 8 m3/h to 45 m3/h. The average pressure of the sludge in transport is 6.4 MPa.
