The environmental friendly activity

The power plant was designed to burn coal with a high sulfur and ash content. It burnt the fuel according to its design till the 90s. Thanks to the new approach to environmental protection regulations, it has prepared "The concept of power plant restructuring" combined with the plant's power restructuring and extension of its operating life for further 20 years.

The modernisation method chosen is based on the reduction of the ash and gas contamination and on resulting investments concerning the solid and liquid waste management.

Owing to the new systems, the accumulation of ash and slag on the dump sites has been stopped. Now they are put in the underground mine headings and are used to seal embankments and slopes, as road construction material and as a sealing layer of dump site floors. Currently, a system producing construction engineering elements with the use of ashes is being set up.

In the two power units, a Sulfur Removal System has been installed with the efficiency exceeding 87%.

The two oldest conventional boilers were replaced with new generation fluidized bed combustors with a circulation bed where low temperature burning (ca. 850 °C) is accompanied by a low degree of nitric oxides emission. The addition of calcium compounds to the furnace makes it possible to reduce the sulphur oxygen contents up to 95%.

In fluidized bed combustors, apart from the basic fuel, there can also be burnt wastes from a company wastewater treatment plant, from water decarbonisation as well as coal sludge. Recently, trial burning of biomass is being carried out. The flue gas ducts of the power units have been equipped with stationary apparatus for continuous emission measurements with allows to monitor and fully control dust and gas pollutants emitted to the atmosphere.
In the four power units, low emission combustion systems reducing the emission of nitrogen oxides up to 50% have been installed. The system of neutralising post processed waste and mazout waste and other solutions reducing the noise level have been created.

A noticeable sign of the environmental protection policy of the Siersza power plant was the fact that the plant obtained the ISO 14001 Certificate in the electric and thermal energy industry. The Siersza plant was the first one in Poland which was given the ISO 14001 Certificate.

The "Siersza" Power Plant is a member of the Polish Chamber of Ecology.

In the subsequent years, the Company was also awarded for its achievements in the field of environmental protection:
  • In July 2000 - the plant was excluded from "the list of the eighty plants" which were the most harmful to the environment as a result of the environmental protection activities carried out in the 90s.
  • In November 2001 - the Minister of Environmental Protection awarded the plant the "Pantheon of Polish Ecology" prize. The prize is to honour the Polish companies which have prepared and implemented the Environmental Management System that is in line with international standards.
  • In December 2003 - the plant was awarded with the prize of the 7th edition of the Minister of Environmental Protection Competition |"The Leader of Polish Ecology" in the category of clean manufacture products. The Siersza plant won the first place from among 15 candidates for the project called "The use of process waste in production of new generation materials applicable in various branches of industry".
